Dexter 7.04 Yvonne Shines

It’s Yvonne on “Dexter” Sunday…week 2. As much as we want to learn…and see Yvonne…we’re only getting dribs of the Hannah story. It’s all compartmentalized in the ongoing Dexter milieu. But we’ll take what we can get…and next week promises to be more.

Hannah has quite a story to tell. But she isn’t telling, not the real story. Not the real truth. It’s the story she told the police that kept her in “juvie” instead of prison. But now, with Wayne dead and Dexter on the case, the truth of that story is in question. And, now they have her DNA.

Hannah: There’s a rumor going around that you were the last to talk with Wayne before he, uh, died

Dexter: His last words were about you.

Hannah (nervously): Oh?

Dexter: He said something about every day being like an unwrapped present

Hannah (smiling): Yeah, I remember when he got that fortune…from a cookie.

Hannah is more questions than answers at this stage. Yvonne is giving her just enough vulnerability mixed with concern. Mostly the concern seems to center on whether her real story will be uncovered.

Dexter: You two didn’t stay in contact?

Hannah: Too painful…

Dexter asks her if there was a plan…

Hannah: Not at first. We were just trying to get out of Clopton Alabama, which isn’t really a town, just an intersection & a cemetery. But somewhere around Sarasota, a plan began to form. Argentina. We were going to find a farm in Argentina and settle down. (smirk)

Dexter: What?

Hannah: We were living on farms in Alabama, but somehow it was going to be different in South America.

Dexter: Do you miss him?

Hannah: I miss the way I felt with him, when we were on the road …that life was just beginning and anything was possible. You know that feeling?

Dexter: (sadly) No.

Last week, Hannah didn’t want anything to do with the police. But now that other bodies may be involved, she needs to be involved too. She may say it’s at the advice of her lawyer…but it’s more likely the need to know what they know. All following that well known concept: keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

The conversation between Hannah & Dexter is beautifully set up. Intimate close-ups for wonderfully expressive facial moves…which, of course are Yvonne’s forte. She captures wistfulness with a smile…and subtle flirtation with her eyes.

Dexter seems more distracted around Hannah this week…and who can blame him. Between the release of the serial killer on brutality charge, and the suicide of the man who confesses to killing the detective (which can’t be, of course, since Dexter killed the real murder). And, then there’s that whole Russian mob thing which seems to be pointing to a real problem for Dexter.

But, really … we’re much more concerned about more of the Hannah story and more screen time for Yvonne. Next week sets the stage for a deeper connection between Hannah & Dexter …and more revelations about just how involved Hannah was in the killing spree with Wayne. ”Robin” may have done more to help “Batman” than just hold his cape.

As an aside, Ray Stevenson must not have much of a twitter following. Here he is, the murderous Russian mob guy who has had three times as much screen time as Yvonne and he’s an afterthought in “Dexter” publicity. Just his luck he’s competing with the twitter maven for any visibility.

So one more week of waiting. But the payoff will be worth it.
